UK Website Design - What To Avoid

Here are a few things you should avoid when designing your own site, or having one designed for you.

Bad websites are everywhere and will reflect badly on your business. Bad web design will mean your website will not be a success. It is the difference between a website that people and search engines will regard highly, and a website is a site that people will consider pointless and a waste of time.

DO NOT - Have large images on your home page, if possible, they will take ages to download - the surfer will become bored of waiting and simply click away

DO NOT - Use every font colour and style available. This just makes your text hard to read. Chose one font style (ie. Arial, Times New Roman) and make sure this font is a suitable one that most people will have installed on their PC. If you use a font such as Comic Sans MS, and a surfer does not have that font on their system, the computer will chose which font to use, and you will have no control of how it will look on their screens. Choose only one or two colours for your text. These rules can be broken for text that is in an image

DO NOT - Fill your website site with sounds and annoying JavaScript. Many Web Developers like to show off their skills when it comes to designing a web site. But by doing so, they will cause nothing but annoyance. Yes, some sounds and movement can be nice, but do not force your visitors to listen to your rendition of Tchaikovsky's 1812. Limit your usage of JavaScript, though some can be nice, no one really likes little images following their every mouse move.

DO NOT - Fill your pages with useless fluff. Make sure the content on your pages is current and relevant. Do not waffle and keep to the point you are trying to make
