UK Website Design - What Else Can You Do
There are a few other things you can do to aid the performance of your website. One would be submitting your website to Directories.
Directories are (sometimes annoyingly) everywhere on the Internet. But as a website owner, they can be of great use to you. As mentioned in our previous page about reciprocal linking, this is what directories do. You submit your details to them, and they link to you, causing the wonderful one-way linking scenario.
Some directories are considered a must by some search engines and rely heavily upon your presence within them. The most important ones are Yahoo's directory and The Open Directory. You can find these listed on any good search engine. It is worth taking time to submit your new website to these. It is worth noting that Yahoo charge for some of their categories, but by simply taking the time to find another relevant category to submit yourself to you should find a free one.
It is also worth taking the time to find other directories out there that are relevant to your website (i.e. a Hotel will find many directories for Hotel listings etc) these again will class as one-way links and are worth being listed in, as some directories can rank very highly with the search engines.
Word of caution: please be weary of paying to be included in some search engines and directories. There are only around 15 search engines worth having your website listed on (ie Google, Yahoo, MSN, Ask Jeeves, Lycos etc) Some companies will try to charge you money to submit your website to thousands of search engines. I ask you how many of these search engines have you ever used. We would be very surprised if 3/4's of the population can name more then 10 of them. If in doubt, pick up the phone and ask us.
